Post Partum Depression is Real

Mental Health Comments Off

Carol Coronado, a 30 year old mother of three, stabbed her three children to death and more than likely it was due to postpartum depression. Severe postpartum depression can cause delusions, hallucinations and psychosis, the same symptoms found in mental illness. The reason? Hormone imbalance. If you believe you are suffering from postpartum depression talk to your doctor immediately, preferably one that has experience in hormone balance.

Below is a synopsis of what happened according to Daily Mail Online.

Carol Coronado, 30, (pictured left with one of her children and right) was found naked in bed clutching a knife alongside the bloody bodies of her daughters, ages three, two and two months. The killings took place at the family home near Torrance, California while Coronado’s husband and mother were at the property (center). A neighbor said the children’s grandmother told her that her daughter had called earlier in the day and was going crazy. Coronado was arrested on suspicion of murder, taken to a hospital for examination and then to a sheriff’s station for booking. Authorities say she made no statement.

If you are estrogen dominant, you do not need to take more estrogen!

Mental Health Comments Off

I get lots of emails from readers who say they are estrogen dominant and that they are taking estrogen to treat it. This is NOT good. If you are estrogen dominant, this means that your estrogen levels are too high, adding more estrogen on already high levels of estrogen is really dangerous and not a good idea.

By adding estrogen to estrogen dominance, you can expect more anxiety, autoimmune problems, headaches, excessive fatigue and poor concentration. I could go on and on about the symptoms of high estrogen. If you have high estrogen do not take more estrogen, this includes estrogen found in birth control pills. If you feel you need birth control, you will need to find an alternative non-hormonal birth control so that you can keep your sanity.

If you have high estrogen, you MUST take progesterone. The real, bioidentical kind. Not a synthetic progestin.

Here are a few things you need to know when starting progesterone, progesterone it is NOT like taking a magic pill. It will not make all of your mental and physical problems will disappear instantly. It does not happen like that. It took months and years for the imbalance to get to such a severe state it takes a while to dig your body out of that state. With progesterone, you should notice a gradual improvement in your symptoms over time until your symptoms are undetectable.

They key with progesterone supplementation is to take high amounts of progesterone in the beginning. Dr. Lee called this a loading dose. The purpose of this higher than normal dose is to restore depleted levels. Once your symptoms are under control, you can take lower amounts or physiological amounts, the amounts your body should be making on its own.

When you start progesterone its common to feel worse before you feel better. I went through this. Most of us with this imbalance go through this. Don’t be afraid, you will get through it. The initial discomfort you experience in the beginning of therapy is worth the prize of your health that is waiting for you on the other side.

If your hormones are off balanced, get them balanced so that you can get your life back. We were not created to live in a body that does not make sufficient progesterone. Major damage happens to our bodies and brains when we do….progesterone does much more than fertility! Balance your hormones and balance your mental health. Good luck to you! Doris

Now is the time to restore your mental health. Do not wait for a physician or your husband or wife to tell you to get better. Tell yourself that you can get better. Stop waiting for someone to convince you to take care of yourself.

The Hardest Thing

Mental Health Comments Off

The hardest thing about using hormones as a treatment option is going to be convincing your doctor that there are actually things he or she can do to help you be healthy! This is especially true if you are male.

The bottom line is we need balanced hormones (between estrogen and progesterone) in order to be mentally and physically healthy. If your body is not making enough progesterone you will get sick. When I say sick, I mean you can develop violent mood swings, depression, hallucinations, psychosis, migraines, excessive water weight, irritability, rage, racing thoughts, fatigue, anxiety… I could go on and on, but you get the point.

High estrogen can cause all the symptoms of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder.

And thankfully now we can treat it with progesterone.

Hormone Balance Tests

Mental Health 4 Comments

If you have a hormone imbalance between estrogen and progesterone, you may not always need to get tested. The reason is, if you have a severe imbalance, the test may not be able to pick it up. Also, norms have not been established for men as of yet (here in the US) so taking an estradiol/progesterone may not be beneficial as of yet for guys.

The best way to determine if you need progesterone is to take a look at your symptoms. Here is a list of symptoms that can appear if your body isn’t making enough progesterone, click here:

If you take progesterone, be sure to drink lots of water. Progesterone is catabolic meaning it breaks down molecules to give you energy. The body uses water to break down molecules so taking progesterone can make you really thirsty. Be sure to drink lots of water while taking progesterone. Do NOT take dehydrated. Also, pay attention to how it reacts in your body.

Always remember you can be healed from this hormone based imbalance. Knowledge is power. We are going to see wonderful changes in the field of mental health during this generation! Be encouraged. Doris
